NEW MARSKE 3 - 0 BEECHWOOD
Wednesday 30, April 2008

The Under 10's emulated the seniors in sealing their title in emphatic fashion beating Beechwood 3-0. After a nervous 1st half in which Beechwood limited New Marske to long range shots and battled tigerishly for every ball, they eventually opened the scoring 2 minutes into the 2nd half when Billy Ward danced through the Beechwood defence and smashed the ball into the top corner. The lead was increased when Jack Morris turned and shot from the edge of the box, his shot deflected off a defender and hit the inside of the post only to stop dead on the goal line, whilst both sides stopped and stared Jake Steel showed tremendous appetite to pounce and smash the ball home from an inch out. With Tommy Birkbeck seeing little of the ball in goal due to some oustanding work in front of him from Enzo Lemperour, James Davison and Harry Howell the attacks continued the 3rd goal was arguably the pick of the bunch, Jack Morris played the ball from midfield out wide right, Billy ward took on 2 defenders and reached the goal line, looked up and crossed to the far post for Jake Steel to ghost in and headed home to add his 2nd of the game. New Marske then made 3 changes with Ben Cutter, Connor Duffield and Danny Williams entering the fray. The final whistle went to signal New Marskes triumph.

BEECHWOOD 0 - 3 NEW MARSKE
Sunday 27, April 2008

The start of this match saw both squads form a circle around the centre circle to take part in a minutes silence in respect for the sad passing away of a Beechwood player.

The match was fairly even until half time with New Marske going closest with a couple of shots that were well saved, leaving the score at half time 0-0. The 2nd half kicked off and New Marske quickly went looking for the opening goal, it eventually coming when a shot from Billy Ward was saved but Jake steel was onto in a flash to poke the ball home, Billy Ward then added a 2nd a contender for goal of the season, smashing a shot from out wide right over the keeper and into the opposite top corner, the 3rd goal rounded off the scoring when Jack Morris ghosted in at the far post to guide the ball home.

So after playing 17 matches in the league it was all going to come down to the last match, New Marske knowing nothing less than a win would guarantee them the title.

NEW MARSKE 4 - 2 NORMANBY
Sunday 20, April 2008

The Under 10's played host to Normanby, a team who could potentially have a big say on the title this weekend, from New Marske's point of view they did the side no favours the day previous going down by one goal to Thirsk, they had apparently put on a battling performance and seemed ready to try again this morning. The game kicked off with New Marske playing with the wind on their backs, and started brightly, Normanby seemed to relish the physical battle and both sides seemed determined to win every ball. It was not long before New Marske opened the scoring Billy Ward breaking clear of the Normanby defence and as the keeper slid out to save he deftly chipped the ball over him and into the net. Within a few minutes it was 2, Ward playing the ball toward goal over his head, the defence and keeper seemed to misjudge the bounce and Jake Steel bustled his way in forcing the ball over the line. With the wind a big factor it seemed inevitable that it would play a part at some point and when Tommy Birkbeck launched a huge kick up field and towards goal it eluded the defence and bounced in front of Ward and the keeper who appeared to have read the flight of the ball until Ward got a delicate flick with his heel to steer the ball into the net. HT: 3-0

The 2nd half kicked off with Normanby now having the wind on their backs, they immediately saw more of the ball and pushed New Marske back into their own half, when a New Marske player handled outside the box there seemed to be little danger, New Marske forming a wall and marking up well, however the free kick was a cracker and flew into the top corner. Within 5 minutes Normanby's new found confidence payed dividends, hesitation in the New Marske defence saw the ball break free only be rifled into the net, to take the score to 3-2. Rather than make them nervous the 2nd goal appeared to kick New Marske back into life and they were then unfortunate on a couple of occasions not to extend their lead, Jake hitting a superb shot which appeared destined for the bottom corner only to come back off the foot of the post and then Billy forcing a fantastic save from the keeper when one on one. Normanby then hit the post themselves before Billy settled the coaches and supporters nerves when firing into the bottom corner from outside the box. The final whistle brought to an end an enthralling match. The kids showed great composure to dig deep and exert themselves back on a match when Normanby had a head of steam early in the 2nd half.

NUNTHORPE 0 - 1 NEW MARSKE
Wednesday 16, April 2008

The conditions could not have been any better for this match, a warm evening, on a pitch in excellent condition considering it was near the end of the season. This match was always going to be a stern test for New Marske as Nunthorpe had lost only once previously at home. The game kicked off and New Marske immediately tried to get their passing game going, however it was obvious that Nunthorpe were not going to be rolled over easily and were quick into the tackle. Playing with 2 wingers Nunthorpe tried to attack using this width, however New Marske held a great shape and also fought tigerishly for every ball. The 1st real chance of the game fell to New Marske as Billy Ward burst through on goal only to see his effort go agonisingly wide of the foot of the post. Nunthorpe responded with a chance of their own when a cross from the right was met by the Nunthorpe forward but his header went over the bar. New Marske could then have scored a couple when 1st Ward broke but he was thwarted by the goal keeper dashing off his line and then a ferocious shot by James Davison was pushed out for a corner. The real chance of the half saw Ward break down the left and cross deep for Jack Morris to come in unmarked at the far post, a goal seemed a certain however the keeper saved again. HT: 0-0.

The 2nd half kicked off in similar fashion to the 1st, Nunthorpe getting the ball out wide and attacking using this width, New Marske holding a fantastic shape and all though were creating the better chances were having to work extremely hard as there was always a threat of a goal from Nunthorpe on the counter attack. Time was running out when Tommy Birkbeck launched a huge kick upfield, Jack Morris played a lovely back heel volley to Connor Duffield who controlled and slotted the ball into the path of Billy Ward who took a touch then smashed the ball into the roof of the net. New Marske then made a change with Ben Cutter coming on at the back. Nunthorpe then had their best spell, forcing a couple of corners and from these whipping a couple of great balls across the box however Enzo Lemperour on both occassions kept remarkably calm and launched the ball the other end of the pitch, from one of these New Marske could and should have extended their lead 1st Billy Ward shooting from a tight angle, the keeper pulling off a great save, but if that was not enough contender for save of the season followed as Harry Howell who had sat all match controlling the middle of the park turned up to follow up the save and thought he had slotted the ball into an open goal but somehow the keeper flung himself across his goal and saved again. This was to be the last moment of the game. A great game of football played in a good manner from both sides.

NEW MARSKE 1 - 0 BEDALE
Sunday 30, March 2008

With New Marske only achieving a draw in their last match and Thirsk again winning New Marske now required to win their final 5 remaining games starting today. The match proved to be a tight affair.

In extremely windy conditions New Marske started the brighter of the 2 sides, knocking the ball about well given the conditions and showed have opened the scoring in these early exchanges, however the goal did not come and Bedale seemed to grow in confidence when a couple of long range efforts aided by the wind flew just wide. The New Marske goal then led a charmed life when another shot from outside the area smashed against the cross bar. The half finished goalless.

The 2nd half started with New Marske now having the wind on their backs seemingly regaining their composure and starting to probe again for the opening goal, but the conditions were making it hard going. With 3 minutes remaining the goal finally came when Billy Ward controlled the ball in the box and smashed an unstoppable shot high into the roof of the net, coming with only 3 minutes remaining New Marske were able to shut up shop and see out the rest of the game, all credit must go to Bedale who made it extremely difficult for New Marske and were unlucky not to get something from the match.

NEW MARSKE 0 - 0 SOUTH PARK RANGERS
Sunday 16, March 2008

In cold windy conditions both sides did admirably well to put on any kind of show, both sides tried to keep the ball on the floor and play football, however clear cut chances were at a premium and it probably came as no surprise to anyone that at the final whistle that the game ended goalless.

REDCAR TOWN B 2 - 1 NEW MARSKE
Sunday 9, March 2008

New Marske travelled to local rivals Redcar Town to play only their 2nd league match in 13 weeks since December the 9th. It was evident in their play early on as they struggled to settle and Redcar chased down well and tried to ensure this advantage remained. New Marske however started to knock the ball around and for the remaining 10 minutes of the half it looked like they were finding their old form, the half finishing too early for New Marske and gave Redcar time to get their shape and composure back.

The 2nd half started in much the same vein and New Marske after missing a couple of glorious chances eventually opened the scoring Billy Ward hitting the roof of the net from 6 yards. New Marske continued to ask the questions and at this point should have put the game to bed, they didn't and lived to regret it, from out wide right a Redcar player knocked a ball into the box which eluded evryone except the Redcar striker waiting at the far post who stroked the ball home from a yard out to make the score 1-1. Worse was to come for New Marske when with seconds remaining and 4 New Marske players breaking at the Redcar goal the ball was cleared, falling to a Redcar player on the half way line who took a couple of touches before toe poking a cracking shot from 25 yards out which flew into the bottom corner of the New Marske goal with 10 seconds remaining on the clock. It was very harsh going on New Marske who did more than enough to win the game, but all credit to Redcar Town who never gave in and scored goals at a vital time.

NEW MARSKE 0 - 1 TEESSIDE ATHLETIC
Sunday 10, February 2008

New Marske played host to Teesside in the local derby in a game played in damp conditions with fog trying it's best to close in. The game had huge importance for both sides, Teesside needing to win to close the 4 point gap New Marske had on them and New Marske needing to keep in touch with leaders Thirsk. It may have been this pressure that resulted in the 2 sides playing very little football, neither side got the ball on the floor, Teesside content to force throw ins to progress down the flanks, New Marske never getting out of the starting blocks at all. Teesside won a couple of corners and it was from one of these they took the lead, the ball whipped in nicely into the box and a New Marske player hitting the ball behind him into the net whilst trying to clear. The 1st half continued in much the same vein, with neither side really having a 'clear cut' chance. Half time: 0-1.

The 2nd half kicked off with the home supporters expecting that by now New Marske may have turned up and whilst they did threaten in patches is was nothing like the standard that they themselves have set. New Marske then started to push more and more bodies forward looking for the equaliser and in doing so on a couple of occasions Teesside could and possibly should have extended their lead, a couple of times finding themselves 2 on 1 going forward. The chance of the game them came and went begging when Billy Ward burst through from midfield taking on the last defender and beating him and bearing down on the keeper but as he went to shoot the Teesside defender half recovered and did enough to put him off by catching his standing foot, and the shot flashed agonisingly wide of the post. The last couple of minutes saw Teesside then have the better of the chances and only brave goal keeping from Tommy Birkbeck and a goal line clearance from Enzo Lemperour prevented Teesside scoring more. It was evident from New Marske's lack luster performance that the lack of matches has affected them, this was their 1st match in over 2 months and it told, however that is taking nothing away from Teesside who worked hard for their win and will be pleased to have turned over their local rivals.

THIRSK FALCONS 0 - 1 NEW MARSKE
Sunday 9, December 2007

This match saw 1st versus 2nd in the division, despite a lot of recent rainfall the pitch was in a fairly good condition, the day was dry, bright and brisk and pre-kick off there seemed to be an expectation from the supporters that a great match was about to commence. The previous and only meeting between the 2 sides had seen Thirsk run out deserved 4-1 winners away to New Marske early this season, the New Marske coaches however made some poor tactical decisions that day and probably let the kids down.

Very early on it was evident that both sides knew the importance of the match, Thirsk probably thinking back to the earlier match played with a lot of confidence and endeavoured to knock the ball around and try and play football. New Marske on the other hand held a fantastic shape and early on seemed content to see what Thirsk had to offer, each player holding their respective position. The game ebbed and flowed with neither side having any real ‘clear’ cut openings, if anything coming upto half time New Marske had started to just edge the exchanges but there was not much in the 2 sides.

The 2nd half continued in much the same manner, Thirsk continued to play nice football, New Marske very controlled and looking menacing on the break. The chances however got ever closer and the Thirsk Keeper was called upon to make a couple of outstanding saves, with the clock running down and it looking likely the teams would have to settle for a point a piece, a wayward pass by a Thirsk defender was picked up and dispatched into back of the net in a flash by Billy Ward, New Marske then had a couple of gilt edge chances to seal the match but a miss and another great save kept the score line at Thirsk 0-1 New Marske to see New Marske move 4 points clear at the top of the league. A fantastic and enthralling match, which held everyone’s attention from the 1st to the final whistle.

BEDALE 1 - 2 NEW MARSKE
Sunday 25, November 2007

New Marske travelled to Bedale knowing a win would see them go top as Thirsk did not have a game, this match in previous years has been physical battle by 2 determined sides. Early on Bedale pinned New Marske back as they settled quickest and created a couple of half chances. A moment of skill then led to the opener, Jack Morris with his back to the Bedale defender and goal, out wide and on the half way line, flicked the ball over his head and span the defender, after breaking down the wing he got his head up playing the ball into the feet of Billy Ward who's shot fell to Jake Steel at the far post to slot home from close range. Within a couple of minutes it was 2, good inter play between Billy, Jack and Jake saw the ball fall to Jake who slotted home his and New Marske's 2nd. Bedale then had a couple of half chances one a lovely turn and shot inside the box which went narrowly wide. New Marske then settled again and the trio of Harry Howell, James Davison and Ben Cutter looked solid. With 2 minutes to go an 'over fussy' referee awarded a penalty which was as much a shock to the Bedale players, supporters and coaches as it was New Marske's, this was calmly dispatched to make the score 2-1. New Marske then showed remarkable maturity to hold the ball on the flanks to see out the final couple of minutes and for the time being go back top of the table.

NEW MARSKE 4 - 1 REDCAR TOWN 'B'
Sunday 18, November 2007

New Marske played host to a 'derby' clash with Redcar Town B, a team who remained undefeated in the league and having a great record of conceeding only one goal in the league all seaon. The writing appeared to be on the wall when Redcar opened the scoring after only 2 minutes when after fine play out wide right the ball was played into the box to be dispatched into the roof of the net. The match then saw both sides have good chances New Marske showing glimpses of getting their act together and Redcar seeing a chance go agonisingly wide after a fantastic run and shot was cleared off the goal line and fell back to the same player who poked it goalwards but just wide of the post. New Marske then got themselves back on level terms when a corner from Jake was flicked into the goal by Billy Ward. The teams going in at half time 1-1.

The 2nd half then saw New Marske playing with the wind on their backs and they never looked back, they went into the lead when Jake picked the ball up out wide left and cut inside onto his right foot dispatching a great strike into the bottom corner, Redcar still looked dangerous on the break but the more they commited people forward looking for the equaliser the more chances New Marske seemed to be getting and in a space of 3 minutes New Marske found themselves with a 4-1 lead as Billy added 2 to the tally. It may seem this was a game for the strikers but this game had a lot more than than that for New Marske, as it was an extremely strong TEAM performance and the passing and unselfish play reaped it's rewards.

SOUTH PARK RANGERS 0 - 1 NEW MARSKE
Saturday 10, November 2007

In a game brought forward from Sunday due to the kids taking part in Rememberance day parades, New Marske put on a performance to remember. South Park are never an easy team to play as like New Marske they have a good blend of skill and passion. The match was a very even and tense affair throughout, New Marske edging the early exchanges and looking the most likely to opening the scoring and they did just that when Billy Ward hit a hopeful shot lob into the box which the keeper came out to collect however Jake Steele also fancied his chances of connecting with it and the pair reached the ball at the same time with Jake coming out on top forcing the ball in to put New Marske ahead. South Park continuously looked dangerous on the break and New Marske responded by tightening up the midfield. Both teams then battled away with South Park looking for the equaliser and New Marske looking to hold onto what they had, in the end the score remained 1-0 and New Marske moved into 2nd place in the league 1 point behind the leaders albeit this gap may increase depending on results tomorrow.

NEW MARSKE 2 - 1 NUNTHORPE ATHLETIC 'B'
Sunday 28, October 2007

New Marske Under 10's entertained Nunthorpe with the hope of getting back to winning ways after a recent barren spell of 4 games without a win. The setting and conditions where perfect as the over night rain stopped and with only a slight wind both teams had the chance to play football. New Marske pushed on early and forced a couple of corners which they failed to convert. Nunthorpe then had the games 1st real chance when the ball fell to a Nunthorpe player 1 yard out but thankfully the player mis-kicked and the ball was cleared for a corner. New Marske kept forcing the play at this point and had several corners one of which saw them open the scoring, Jake Steel played the ball in and Harry Howell got his head to it to flick it into the far corner. The rest of the half saw neither team get hold of the ball, although Billy Ward was unlucky to see a shot go for a corner when the Nunthorpe keeper did really well to save low down at his left hand side. HT: 1-0.

The 2nd half started very much in the same vein, with New Marske sitting a little deeper and conceeding ground in Nunthorpe's half but always looking dangerous on the break, however the game was to draw level when good pressure from Nunthorpe saw the ball played into the box and the Nunthorpe striker showed good appetite for a goal to strike and make the score 1-1. Nunthorpe by now fancied their chances of winning the game and started to push players on looking for the winner but the effort was to prove academic when Billy Ward picked the ball up deep in his own half and ran at Nunthorpe finding himself with only the keeper to beat, the ball slotted away to seal the victory for New Marske 2-1, it has to be said that from the point the goal went in the kids proved they had learned the lesson from conceeding the late goal the week previous at Richmond and played with great maturity to see the game out in the final couple of minutes.

RICHMOND TOWN 1 - 1 NEW MARSKE
Sunday 21, October 2007

The Under 10's travelled to Richmond, perfect conditions met the 2 sides this morning. Prior to kick off a minutes silence was held and immaculately respected by both sides in respect of Michael Maidens, the young Hartlepool United midfielder who died in a car accident on Friday night who was a former New Marske Junior. The game kicked off with New Marske quickly into their stride and some jinking runs from Jack Morris causing problems on the right for Richmond and with Billy Ward always looking dangerous it seemed only a matter of time that the 1st goal would come, Jake Steel was also seeing a lot of the ball on the left but some outstanding goalkeeping from the Richmond goal keeper was frustrating New Marske. However nerves where settled when a cross shot fell to Jake at the far post and was coolly dispatched. Minutes later Billy tried for contender of goal of the season when from the Richmond keepers long high kick he volleyed it straight back from the half way line only for the ball to go just wide of the goal. Richmond's chances at this point where limited however a tremendous free kick out wide left was destined for the top right hand corner until Tommy Birkbeck stuck his hand up at the last minute to knock it out for a corner. It seemed New Marske would go in 2 up with a couple of minutes remaining of the half when Billy broke into the box and shot but agonisingly the ball hit the foot of the post.

Richmond came out with more purpose for the 2nd half and tried to get some passes going, however New Marske always looked the more likely to score again and half a dozen chances where thwarted with the Richmond goal keeper having a 'Roy of the Rovers' type performance in goal. With 5 minutes remaining Richmond made a double change and where generally seeing more of the ball than at any time previous, the alarm bells where ringing when on couple of occasions they found themselves 3 against 2 as the New Marske midfield kept pushing on looking for a 2nd goal when they should have seen the game out and the equaliser came with 2 minutes remaining and it must be said at this point it was coming. Lesson learned for New Marske, a good draw away from home but a match they should have won.

NEW MARSKE 1 - 4 THIRSK FALCONS
Sunday 14, October 2007

Near perfect conditions met the 2 sides as New Marske played host to Thirsk Falcons in a 1st v 2nd clash at the top of the table. It was New Marske who got into their stride quickest and some good inter play and intelligent passes saw several chances created for the front 3, a couple of shots in particular from Billy Ward unlucky not to see them opening their account. It was not all one way and Tommy Birkbeck in goal had to be sharp to block an effort mid way through the half. Although at this point there seemed only one team who was going to win the match as the majority of the play was in the Thirsk half of the pitch, but they defended well and limited New Marske to shots from outside the box.

The 2nd half got under way with New Marske showing the same urgency, and should have again taken the lead when Billy broke from half way and a left foot shot zipped narrowly wide of the left hand post. Worse was to follow though when there seemed little danger out on the left when a Thirsk player played a deep cross into the box, however the ball eluded everyone and sailed into the far corner. It was about to be 2v0 minutes later when Enzo Lemperour and the Thirsk striker tackled for the ball, but the ball broke the Thirsk players way and he coolly slotted the ball home. It seemed New Marske had been given a life line when Billy picked the ball up mid way into the Thirsk half and lashed a venomous shot into the roof of the net from 20 yards out to make it 2v1. Unfortunately minutes later a slip by Tommy in the New Marske goal as he went to kick it out saw the ball fall to Thirsk and the striker calmly rolled the ball into the open goal 3v1. With seconds remaining it was to be 4v1 when a long throw into the New Marske box could only be helped on by a New Marske player and a Thirsk striker met the ball to volley home from close range.

It would be fair to say that all in all it was a bad day at the office today, if the chances had gone in early on when New Marske where on top the result would probably have been different, however the chances going begging and some poor tactical decisions by the coaches on the day let the kids down. That is not taking anything away from Thirsk who found themselves still in the game in the 2nd half and took the chances when offered and recorded a good win to go top of the table.

WHINNEY BANKS 1 - 0 NEW MARSKE
Sunday 7, October 2007

It was Cup Weekend and the setting and weather was made for football at kick off and the match did not disappoint, New Marske pushed on in the early minutes but Whinney banks held firm and enjoyed a period of possession themselves creating a couple of half chances, the best chance of the half resulting in Whinney banks hitting the foot of the post. New Marske had chances of their own and a quick free kick from James Davison released Jack Morris who beat the full back but shot just over the bar. At this point the game was there to be won and both sides had their chances with Tommy Birkbeck in the New Marske goal making several comfortable saves, although the chances were getting a little too frequent, at the other end Billy Ward set off on a good run and a venomous strike saw the ball flash agonisingly wide of the post. The winning goal for Whinney banks came from a set piece, a corner on the left rolled to just outside box and stroked into the bottom corner. New Marske never gave up the game, and Jack Morris in particular constantly tormented the full back but the equaliser would not come.

The match was a great advert for Grassroots football although the attitude from a couple of the Whinney Banks players left a sour taste in the mouth, surely when you are as good as some of these players are there is no need for the poor sportsmanship shown especially when you have won the match, however this was probably isolated to one player in particular and the other kids should not let this detract from a great match.

TEESSIDE ATHLETIC 'A' 1 -1 NEW MARSKE
Sunday 30, September 2007

In the local derby at Teesside Athletic 'A', New Marske started the game the brighter of the 2 sides and the confidence from recent matches was evident as they passed the ball well, created chances and looked strong and comfortable at the back. It came as no surprise when New Marske opened the scoring, Harry Howell won a strong tackle in midfield, Jake Steel helped the ball on to Billy Ward who rifled the ball into the roof of the net from an acute angle. New Marske continued to press looking to extend their lead but the 2nd goal would not come. Teesside should have equalised just before half time, when from a New Marske corner the ball broke to a Teesside striker who ran in one on one on goal, however Tommy Birkbeck closed his angles down well and made a terrific save, to keep the half time score 0-1.

Almost immediately from kick off Teesside looked sharper than they had been previously and began exerting pressure for the 1st time in the game. The result being New Marske began to lose a bit of their shape. The back line with the help of the midfield kept Teesside at bay resticting them to long range shots, however Teesside's corner count was rising quickly and New Marske's exertions from running the Great North Run the day previous was possibly beginning to tell on a few legs. The deserved equaliser came when a clearance from New Marske fell to a Teesside player who smashed the ball from outside of the box through a sea of players into the back of the net. An enjoyable game and probably fair result.

NEW MARSKE 4 - 2 RICHMOND TOWN
Sunday 23, September 2007

In very blustery conditions Richmond elected to kick with the wind in the 1st half and within 10 minutes found themselves 2-0 up. The attitude shown from New Marske was superb and none of their heads dropped and a crucial goal from Billy Ward just before half time was credit to their resillience. New Marske kicked off the 2nd half and within a couple of minutes found themselves on level terms, again Billy finding the net with a long range effort which the keeper could only parry into his own goal. Richmond by now were finding the going tough kicking into the wind, they tried to play football and showed good midfield skills at times, but by now New Marske seemed to sense the game was there to be won and after playing most of the match battling in midfield to break up the play, from a corner Harry Howell ghosted in at the far post to calmly slot home to make it 3-2, the scoring was not yet over, with the Richmond keeper finding it hard kicking into the wind, one of his clearances fell straight to Billy who after taking one touch dispatched the ball back into an open goal from 25 yards out to complete his hatrick and the scoring. The side showed a great deal of character in difficult conditions, Well done lads.

PS It was good to see Ben Cutter returning to the side after a lengthy absence, and I am sure he will welcome the chance to play football again.

NEW MARSKE 2 - 1 STOKESLEY
Sunday 16, September 2007

The under 10's played host to Stokesley in a cup game which was played in extremely blustery conditions, New Marske elected to start with the wind on their backs, and the next 15 minutes was spent very much in the Stokesley half of the pitch, but a mixture of poor finishing, Stokesley battling hard and the conditions saw the game still level at half time.

The 2nd half saw New Marske kicking against an ever increasing wind they got the ball on the floor and started to play more attrative football, time and again carving open the Stokesley back line, but the Stokesley keeper was having a blinder and the inevitable sucker punch came when a Stokesley player went down the right wing and played the ball across the box for a team mate to smash home. To their credit the goal did not affect New Marske in the slightest and they continued to exchange passes prompting and probing for the equaliser, it eventually came when Stokesley failed to clear their lines and the ball fell to Jake Steel to calmly slot the ball into the net. Not content with a draw New Marske pushed on hard looking for the winner, and it was not long in coming, Billy Ward picking the ball up, showing a good turn of pace and stroking the ball clinically into the bottom corner of the net to send New Marske through into the next round.

NORMANBY 0 - 2 NEW MARSKE
Sunday 9, September 2007

New Marske under 10's travelled to Normanby to kick off their new season, expectations were high as the team had finished last season like a runaway train, and true to form New Marske pushed on to try and make an early impact, however it was Normanby who could have taken the lead, with New Marske pushing on, the ball was cleared and found it's way to a Normanby striker, who unleashed a shot which deflected off Enzo Lemperour and Tommy Birkbeck in the New Marske goal did well to hold. This seemed to wake the
New Marske defence of James Davison and Enzo who went on to have commanding games, with Birkbeck at times seeing little of the ball. The seasons 1st goal was scored by Bradley Pine making his league debut, running onto a delighful through ball from Billy Ward he unleashed a venomous strike into the top corner of the net. Normanby tried and played some good football after the goal, but Harry Howell was immense in the middle of the park and tackled everything that moved. New Marske could have increased their lead
when some delightful interplay saw the ball fall to Jake Steele who carved open the Normanby back line to play in Pine but a Normanby defender had not given up hope and made an outstanding tackle to put the ball out.

Substitutions in the 2nd half saw Pine and Steele replaced by Connor Duffield and Danny Williams but this was no respite for Normanby, the other New Marske debutant Billy Ward had done everything but score but that was to change half way through the 2nd half, picking up the ball from a Normanby throw deep in his own half, he set off on a run, powering forward to the edge of the Normanby box, the ball was calmly despatched into the bottom corner of the net, to seal a fantastic team performance.
